The Legend of Queen Heo Hwang-ok RANI Sembavalam
Princess Sembavalam, whose name means “Yellow Jade,” set sail from India nearly 2,000 years ago to marry King Kim Suro of the Gaya Kingdom in Korea. Remarkably, her Korean name, Heo Hwang-ok, shares the same meaning. Though steeped in legend, her story continues to intrigue historians and cultural enthusiasts, serving as a symbol of unity and shared heritage between India and Korea.
Her influence extended far beyond her royal marriage. She brought advanced knowledge of astronomy, agriculture, and medicine, which transformed the kingdom and led the people of Gaya to prosperity. Her contributions earned her deep respect, and over time, her story evolved into legend, with many believing she was sent by the gods to bless the land.
Today, Queen Heo Hwang-ok is venerated in both Korea and India. Her shrine in Gimhae stands as a testament to her lasting legacy, visited by thousands who seek her blessings for good fortune and success.
